Yearbook Ideas
What are some different ideas for book layout and design?

Yearbooks can come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The Yearbook Idea chapter provides a few ideas related to yearbook layout and design, for example:
  • A horizontally oriented yearbook verses a more conventional yearbook layout.
  • Other popular school theme oriented yearbooks.
  • Yearbook templates and designs that you can use.

Yearbook Planning
What kind of yearbook do I need?
Yearbooks come in either hard cover or soft cover. The size of the book depends upon your needs. Our recommendation is that you choose a size that fits your school. School Annual’s small book (5.5" x 8.5") is a small size for preschools or small organizations. The soft cover 8.5" x 11" is the most popular style. Schools that have higher grade levels, graduating classes, or need durability for the years to come usually choose a hard cover.

The Yearbook Planning chapter will give you some suggestions for:

  • Organizing your yearbook committee.
  • Questions to ask your school photographer.
  • Decide the best creation method for laying out your yearbook.

Yearbook Content
What should I put in the yearbook?
Typically, most yearbooks begin with an intro page, page for principal, page(s) for staff, supporting staff, student pictures, and then "special events". One of our schools took a photo of the principal and asked him to write a personal letter to the students. He loved the idea, and became a huge advocate of the yearbook.

Many, many candids! Remember, parents have already seen and purchased the professional photos of their children – they like seeing "a day in the life" of their child.

The Yearbook Content chapter will help you decide what to put in your yearbook. It will help you answer a few questions like:

  • How do I organize my yearbook?
  • What is a Ladder or Outline?
  • How are my yearbook pages numbered?

Copyright Law

What is a Copyright?

Copyright law protects the individual's right to control the use of their intellectual property. Copyright law applies to literature, music, lyrics, plays, choreography, pictures, photos, sculptures, graphics, movies, audiovisual works and sound recordings.

Copyright and trademark infringement can result in lawsuits. Copyright law was created to protect the artist, the creator, or the holder of the copyright from unlawful use of their material. The responsible student journalist needs to understand copyright law in order to avoid costly fines and/or delays in publication.

The Copyright Law chapter provides valuable information concerning general copyright and trademark law related to content used in your yearbook.

Yearbook Sales

When do I start selling the yearbook?

Begin the yearbook sales during the "Back to School" PTO/PTA meeting. Several sales campaigns should be conducted throughout the year. The last spring campaign should have the price of the book raised to try and incent parents to order early.

The Yearbook Sales chapter will give you ideas on how to sell your yearbook to your students and your local community, for example:

  • When do I start selling the yearbook?
  • How can I make the yearbook a fundraiser with my community?
  • How do I price business ads?

Marketing Your Yearbook
Promotion is the key and parents are interested at the beginning of the school year.

Advertise with posters, stickers, and personalized order forms.

Offer additional items such as Flashbax®, foil personalization, and icons.  Hold a special design cover contest to showcase the winner's artwork.  Other entries become a back cover collage or feature backgrounds within the book.
